| Background – from the idea to the foundation |

The idea of the Dr. Pandalis Foundation emerged from Naturprodukte Dr. Pandalis GmbH & Co.KG, which became established in the Lower Saxony village of Glandorf, Germany at the end of the 1980s. Here, in the midst of farms and fields, the world seemed still to be in order and nature still to be intact – apparently ideal pre-requisites for a company which develops and produces natural products. The idyllic appearance proved deceptive, however. It very quickly became clear that beneath the smooth surface there was seething and unrest: farmers sitting on their subsidised tractors look after their monocultures and, at the same time, systematically destroying nature's wide diversity of plants. Smelly liquid manure contaminates litre after litre of our drinking water through the nitrates and other toxic substances it contains. The stifled yet desperate screams from our environment are heard only by the sensitive few. And this is typical of the situation throughout the whole of Europe: Anyone who thinks of Greece for example, immediately also sees images of idyllic landscapes, herds of goats grazing under the protective gaze of their shepherds – just as Homer described so impressively in his epic poems. But there is no grazing land anymore: Anyone who wants money from the EU has to be prepared to kill off and bury the ideas and visions of the great poet and philosopher once and for all. A significant part of occidental culture is dying off today on the arable land of Greece! In particular the natural, species-rich scrub landscapes, which have had to give way to conventional agriculture. On the peninsula Chalkidiki, which has been extremely affected, it is only a question of time now until all natural growth has been razed to the ground. Subsidised by funds from Brussels, land here is developed and cultivated by man for tedious mass production of American sunflowers or even Canadian Christmas trees! Appeals to the responsible authorities as well as to Greek ministries and television corporations remain unanswered. Whether in Greece, Germany or elsewhere: people are quite simply not aware of the fact that many different species of plants will be extinct for ever within just a few years unless something significant is done to change the situation! The powerful persons of this world prefer to close their ears to critical voices. Nevertheless, we hope that a foundation can add extra pressure and emphasis to the demands. Against this background the idea of the "traditional European philosophy“ has grown up, which concerns itself with the medicinal and nutritional plants of our ancestors and how they can be used in the context of today's nutrition and medicine, also in connection with environmental protection which is an integral part of this.
